Finally I could take out some time to backup my data and went for a firmware upgrade. I have been using the F8 version since i have gotten the phone. No major problem for me except the lack of chinese input and the stopwatch.

Hi Wen,
Love your omnia blog, it has a lot of unrevealed info on this great phone.
One of the issues remain for Omnia users to find te correct firmware from Samsung.
The list you posted (taken from Samsung I suppose) already confuses me as I have an unbranded Omnia in Dutch.
This list suggest that my version info should have XA as code for the Netherlands, however it has XK.
Originally it was delivered with:
PDA: i900XKHH8/XKHH4
Phone: XXHH9
The latest firmware on the dutch samsung site is:
PDA: i900XKHJ3/XKHJ3
Phone: XXHH9
So if Samsung is right (yes, the new firmware works OK on my phone) about this version on the Dutch download site, then their list is wrong and should say XK for Netherlands.
Keep up the great posts.
Ron
hi ron,
the list is kinda old, last updated was 2006 if i rmb correctly. So i suppose there would be some changes in the code used.
However, if you observe the list, there are some patterns you could see. European countries have X as the first letter, while D for South-east asia, and Z for far-east asia. In addition, since XK is not on the listed, my guess is its a new code for Netherlands.
I might be wrong, but that's my guess.
Glad that you like my post, thank you for visiting.
Hello Wen,
I've just spent a couple of hours reading the interesting information that you post regarding the Samsung Omnia i900 Phone.
You are a very clever guy, I only wish I had a little of your knowledge!
I was very pleased to be given a two year old Omnia, but I am totally unable to get it to connect via Wi-Fi to my Speedtouch 585v6 router.
I suspect that my request for such "low level" help might insult your intelligence, but I have struggled for three weeks now, and all I have achieved (at some point!) is that the phone's Mac address has appeared on the "Devices" page of my router interface as an "unknown" device with an "etherport" icon next to it.
The details page shows it has a "Static" IP address (that of my PC's Wireless LAN Adapter) and that it is "inactive".
The phone "sees" my network, and tries to connect for a short time but then loses interest and tries to mate with a playstation that must be nearby leaving my network showing available.
It goes back and forth between the two, never actually connecting.
The phone has Nine network adapters listed !!
Combining this with the number of connection setting options, I don't think I'll live long enough to try every permutation!
Please help me, you're my last hope!!
Sorry for the lengthy post!
Theracles.
hi theracles
Does ur router requires security key in order to connect to? You might hav chosen the wrong security type. Under network authentication, u could try playing ard with the authentication and data encryption settings. You could switch offf wifi on ur omnia, go to the wireless setting page, if ur network is listed there, remove it and try connecting to ur network again.
If that is not the case, it might be the settings on ur router. It might be configured to limit the number of devices it can connect to (via the range of IP addresses) or the DHCP server might be off. Or ur router has its access control enabled as such new mac address is not permitted.
cheers
Thanks for replying Wen,
Pretty sure I've input the right settings for my router, PPA-PSK, and TKIP along with the network key.
Tried deleting my n'wk and searching but this was just the same.
I'm new to using Hotspots, and on the one occasion I tried it whilst out and about, the same happened, so I suspect it's something to do with my phone settings.
I am totally confused by the nine "Network Adapters" which one should I be using?
The phone always seems to revert to the "Bluetooth PAN Driver" whilst I would suspect the "SyChip Jaguar WLAN GSP Card" would be the one needed but I don't know which settings would be needed,...connect to "Internet" or "Work" so you see I'm totally lost! lol
Thanks for trying.
Sorry, typo!
PPA-PSK should of course read "WPA-PSK"
theracles
you shld set ur network card to connect to Work. Taping on the WLAN GSPI Card to edit its setting, under IP Address, the option 'Use server-assigned IP address' shld b chosen, while the name servers shld b left blank.
hav u try connecting to some other open wireless network to see if it works?
cheers
Hi Wen,
I have the phone set as you describe.
I notice that clicking on the "Use server assigned IP address" automatically provides the IP address "fe80::213:e0ff:fef9", which seems a little strange since the first seperator is two colons!
I did once try to connect unsuccesfully to an open hotspot, but not sure what settings were applied at that time.
I'll try it again when I'm next in range of one.
Since I'm also having problems getting a SIM to work in it, could it be the phone is blocked and would this affect the Wi-Fi use.
My current SIM is a Pay and Go one, the phone recognises it and shows a strong signal but I can't make calls, nor can I receive any.
My friend who gave me the phone cannot tell me anything about it except that it was amongst her husband's belongings when she cleared his office after his death.
hi theracles
a similar sequence shows up on mine when i chose server assigned ip address too.
may i know wat firmware version are u using? you could key *#1234# to find out from the dialer
it might be ur phone is simlock, as such it could only work on sim card of specific telcos. u could test ur handset on one simcard of the same telco as ur fren's husband.
is ur phone on flight mode? if it is in flight mode, the antenna icon at the top will show a cross.
cheers
Hi Wen,
Hmm... entering *#1234# omn the keypad tells me the phone is off, electing to turn it on just tells me there's no SIM in it.
I've looked in "About" and Version" but the firmware isn't listed.
Regards "Flight Mode", I wouldn't know where this is, but since nothing works, I've got all wireless services (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and phone) set to "Off", just turning on the Wi-Fi when I try (and fail!)to connect. lol
Regarding SIM Lock, I took the phone to one of those shops who repair/unlock phones, and they tried several SIM cards in it, never made a call with them but said the phone was neither locked nor blocked.
I don't know what provider's SIM was previously used in it.
Beginning to think it's just going to be an over engineered camera/MP3player which would be such a waste! :o(
hi theracles
u could go to start > settings > connections tab > browser connection > check automatically detect settings
while the string of characters under version > PDA will indicate the firmware of your phone.
if you are using samsung widget screen, go to the wireless manager (its an antenna icon). Clicking on the 'Phone off' button shld turn on the phone.
I have not encounter a phone being locked, so i'm not aware of how will the phone beware. Last resort you might wan to try resetting the device or upgrading the firmware to something newer.
To hard reset, u can take a look here. Or i900.modaco.com for firmware updates
Hav you check the network frequency is ur simcard working on? It might b a case of incompatible network also.
cheers
Hi Wen,
out of desperation took it to a "Phone reclaim" shop yesterday, but even they don't want it!
They say it has been "Blocked" but reconthat it should still function as a Wi-Fi enabled "PDA".
I would be quite happy with that...if only I could get the blessed Wi-Fi to work! lol
The character string under "PDA" is: - i900XXHG5/MSHG1.
Regarding SIM card n'wk frequency, since I can't use my Tesco PayG card in it, there is no SIM in the phone.
I looked at the browser setting you advised, and found that "auto detect" wasn't checked, tried again with that checked but it still does the same, "connecting" then moves on to the next signal, leaving mine showing as just "Available" :0(
hi theracles
My suggestion would be to bring your phone with your simcard to your telco service center for help? If not, you could try updating the firmware of your i900 to see if that helps.
cheers
Thanks for trying to help me Wen,
I guess I'm at the end of the line now!
My phone service provider (Tesco Mobile) were not interested in helping even before I was told the phone was blocked, and I don't have any cables (apart from the charger) to udate the firmware...even if I was clever enough to be able to do it:-(
hi theracles
hav you tried hard resetting your omnia i900? Hard resetting will set the phone back to factory settings.
That's as much as i could help, you might want to look for someone to help you test out the phone physically.
cheers
Thanks Wen, I'm grateful for all your help.
I'll try a hard re-set and if that doesn't work, maybe I'll have to ask one of the local school children if they could sort it for me! lol
Something to say?
