This latest firmware upgrades the Galaxy S to android 2.3.3.

Kies only recognise official firmware versions, i.e. those with telco modifications (XSO). Local firmware w/o telco mod (XSP version) is not eligible for the upgrade still.

Check out this page to switch to XSO

JV9 brings mainly comestic changes, following is a list of changes i have observed so far,

standard android icons on the status bar, instead of Samsung typical blue icons

new icons on the notifications tray

alphabet bar in phonebook as been reverted to the full list

daily briefing widget has been broken into 4 seperate widgets now

wallpaper picker now has 2 size templates to choose from

android text selection cursor has replaced the samsung cursor

"ask on connection" in USB settings has been removed

OTA Software Update has been built into the firmware now

In terms of performance wise, the phone seems a lot faster now. One noticable speed up is the downloading and installing of apps over market, the stall has been reduced significantly. But this is a fresh update, so only time will tell if samsung has really fixed the lag issue.

First run of the GPS seems to give a slightly better results too. Runkeeper manages to track my position accurately for most part of the trip. Somewhat puzzling is that both readings suggested that I have crossed the road along Tampines Central 2, which I have not.

All in all, JV9 seems to be a nice upgrade. Onto gingerbread now.Wesleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08787140758409581887noreply@blogger.com13tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2722427134944458748.post-41251131897214784812011-05-29T00:32:00.000+08:002011-06-04T00:51:08.971+08:00iOS Tip: Sync multiple google calendarsOnly the default calendar is sync-ed when you setup your google account on your device for the first time.

Similarly, all (hopefully) the android phones and tablet (there's only one actually) released in year 2010 are included in the comparison, with their launch date, version of android at launch time, date with upgrade available locally, and upgraded version of android. Here's a table of all the data.

The local scene is somewhat similar to that of the US. Below is the chart that shows the percentage of devices that are running android 2.2 by end of 2010, be it being upgraded to 2.2 or launched with 2.2.

The second chart here presents the average duration manufacturers took to release an upgrade, regardless of upgrade to 2.1 and 2.2.

HTC is your best bet where you might consider giving your money to. Other than google, HTC leads the pack in providing the latest android experience locally. In fact, they have actually upgraded all their 2010 phones to 2.2 in the international market! Kudos to them!

Samsung and LG took an average of 3 months to upgrade their phones. And both of them have upgraded only a third of their portfolio. Despite a spectacular sale of 10 million units, the upgrade of Galaxy S to 2.2 has been dreadfully slow. With Singapore as the launch city for Galaxy S, but among the last few Asia Pacific countries to get the upgrade aint making their consumers happy.
Sony Ericsson also took 3 months to upgrade their phones, but only to 2.1. Not only that, all of their phones come preinstalled with android 1.6 at launch. Especially when android 2.1 and 2.2 was out in January and June respectively, Sony Ericsson still pushes out dated phone in later part of the year, such as X8 with 1.6.

While Motorola provided a reliable update to their phones in the US markets, that does not seem to be so in Singapore or AP. 9 phones are launched in 2010, and they are still stuck in their original android, with some running aged 1.5 and 1.6.

In conclusion, HTC is the most reliable after sales updates, followed by LG, Samsung, Sony Ericsson and Motorola.Wesleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08787140758409581887noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2722427134944458748.post-23590028365559769382011-01-20T22:44:00.001+08:002011-01-20T22:44:55.995+08:00Galaxy S Tip #2: Customising your own romsRemember how dell makes customising your own pc ever so easy?
And its free for some channels or just a mere dollar per day per channel. The live streaming of the channels work very well, with high quality images and audio most of the time. While the travelling underground, there's some intermission occasionally though.

There are 21 channels, some of the big boys are included, such as Channel Newsasia, CNBC, National Geographic and BBC. There's even 7 days TV programme guide built in to check out the upcoming programmes!
After testing the TV mobile on both android and windows mobile, both works similarly. Except, the windows mobile client allows you to create a scheduled reminder for the TV programme, something pretty neat that has been left out in the android version.

Wish Starhub could expand the service to all of their tv channels, especially those bundled free with cable tv subscription. Even better if the client could record the programmes and playback on the mobile phone sometime later. =PWesleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08787140758409581887noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2722427134944458748.post-14699488706988750262010-04-20T20:57:00.001+08:002010-04-20T20:59:29.002+08:00Milestone InsightThe Milestone is exclusively available from Starhub. Among the first to boost Android 2.1 out of the box, the firmware also have slight touches by the telco. The most obvious modification is the start up splash screen being replaced by Starhub logo. A Starhub wallpaper is also included in the phone and a page indicator widget is built into the home screen. Some of the default 3D applications are not seen in this built, namely the main menu and 3D gallery.

Other than an occasional restart, the phone works smoothly and great. Good software in excellent hardware, plus the crazy pricing places this android phone at the top of the pack!

A picture represents a thousand words, let alone a video. Check out the video for more indepth walkthrough of the user interface. =P

Not able to do a screenshot least i root the phone, which probably cause the staff at rip to root me..

Below 1000 ANSI lumens
These are usually entry-level projectors that appeal to those on a shoe-string budget and do not need the bells and whistles.

Output is low, so such projectors are best used in a dark or dimly lit room for small group discussions.

1000 to 2000 ANSI lumens
A step up the price and performance ladder, there are many options in this category. These projectors work best in a smaller conference room or classroom. To get the best performance from these machines, you may need to switch off a few lights in the room.

2000 to 3000 ANSI lumens
This group features the higher-end range of portable and semi-portable devices. Projectors in this group are suitable for large classrooms and big conference rooms, even a mini theatre. With higher brightness output, these projectors work fine in a brightly lit room and can illuminate a larger screen without loss of picture quality.

Above 3000 lumens
Designed for big venues like a concert hall, leacture theatres, churches and auditoriums, these projectors offer the brightest output levels. Naturally, they are more expensive.Wesleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08787140758409581887noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2722427134944458748.post-58850380099806511882010-03-29T00:23:00.059+08:002010-03-29T01:03:06.245+08:00A Milestone in Unboxing!

Received a Milestone as part of RippleVox Trial program. On top of the phone, Starhub has also throw in free MaxMobile Premium data plan for a month! Yippe!

The milestone has a sturdy build quality, especially the slide-out keyboard, it feels that it will last for long. In addition, the golden touch to a little here and there, plus the rubbery backing add a nice classy feel to the phone.

Some thought here, I would prefer spring loaded slider, but the manual mechanism works very well still. For some reasons, lately more phones are designed without the hot-swappable micro-SD slot, so does the Milestone. Not much of an issue though, these are nice to have, but not must.

Unlike other region, this Milestone is preloaded with the latest Android, Eclair version 2.1. The startup splash screen has been modified to that of Starhub, and the set is preloaded with Starhub wallpapers and Mobile TV app.

Logged in to my google account, and milestone is all sync with my contacts, calendars and emails =D

The upgrade to Windows Mobile 6.5 for Omnia 2 is now available on the official website of Samsung in some countries. You can only upgrade your phone through the website of Samsung in the country that is your OMNIA II came from (obviously, by official ways... you can find many other ways and roms here in Modaco comunity to upgrade to WM 6.5 no matter what country your phone came from). I will explain how I did it from the Singapure website...

How do you discover what country is your Omnia II? Go in "Settings", "Advanced Settings", "System", "Version", "Device". You will see three codes: PDA, CSC and PHONE. Everyone starts with I8000 (which is the code of Omnia 2). In CSC, see if the following 3 characteres (after the code I8000) are XSO, and in PHONE see if the two characteres following are DX. If so, your Omnia II came from Singapore (as well as mine).

You can find codes for the other countries here in the Modaco comunity, but I will post some codes that I find here for help you:
To change to one larger icons similar to that of Samsung, you will need at least one image file of size 128 x 128 and add a few entries to the registry.

Here's the step to add you own customised icon

1) Navigate to the folder where the program reside, jot down the full filename. For instance, the default windows inbox, "tmail.exe".

2) Prepare an image file with the background set to transparent. The new QWERTY keyboard works pretty well, except that comma is rather inconvenient to input. The shadowed symbols on top left corner of each key could be inserted by pressing and holding the respective key.

The other 2 keyboards are well hidden. To activate them, press and hold the Mode key until a dialog appears as shown below. Unlike the QWERTY, these 2 are not as well designed. The 20 keys do not have a key to enter punctuation easily. As for the 12 keypad, you could only input the first punctuation as indicated on the keys (though they show 2 there) with the xt9 turned on. Lastly, the default Transcriber, Keyboard and Block Recognizer are skinned also.

This is the only keyboard shown while the composer is in landscape mode.

Tap on the recipient field, a dialog shows up before you could select the guys.

To change between CC, BCC, and To recipients, only way is to do it over at this screen one by one.

Samsung Phonebook
Continuing from Omnia, the current phonebook is very easy to navigate.
